Trove Tuesday: Werris Creek and Nurse Auld

Over the weekend a friend sent me an email asking if I had heard of a Nurse Auld from Werris Creek. Although I had no specific information on Nurse Auld in my database, the location of Werris Creek suggested a connection to David Auld who settled in Cassilis after arriving in NSW in 1853.

Using Trove, a simple search for "Werris Creek Nurse Auld" revealed a number of results...the first one titled Young Man's Death. Further investigation was required...

Source: YOUNG MAN'S DEATH. (1925, May 2). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 16.
Retrieved November 26, 2013, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16232548

The first section of the article was indeed about the death of a young man in Narribri, but further down was a section specifically on Werris Creek (see above). The first line of which was succinct and straight to the point:

Mr David Auld, of Paisley, Caroona, is dead.

David Auld and Lockhart Agnes Paterson

David Auld (son of David Auld and Agnes Adams) was born in High Paisley RFW SCT in 1825 and married Lockhart Agnes Paterson (daughter of Thomas Paterson and Lockhart Isobella Paton) in 1850. David and Lockhart had two children (David and Isobella) before migrating to NSW in 1853. Once settled in Cassilis they had a further nine children (Thomas, John William, Allan Henderson, Lockhart Helen, Jane, Hugh, Jeanette, Andrew & Elizabeth). David died in 1872.

David Auld, son of David and Lockhart Auld

Using the information on the Aulds in the Werris Creek article, the date of death for David Auld matched up with the son of David Auld and Lockhart Agnes Paterson I have on file.

Born in Paisley RFW SCT on 10 April 1850, David Auld married  Emily Jane Sophia Sherwood in Gulgong NSW. David and Emily had eight children (Edward, Millicent, Robert David, Margaret E., Lockhart Agnes, Elizabeth, Arthur William and Francis Irwin) between the years 1875 to 1892. David Auld passed away 29 April 1925.

Who was Nurse Auld?

Again, using the clues provided in the article, we know that Nurse Auld is referred to as Nurse L. Auld. Matching this information with the children of David Auld and Emily Jane Sophia Sherwood leaves us to conclude that Nurse Auld is Lockhart Agnes Auld.

Trove Tuesday: Parisian High Fashion

With the running of the Melbourne Cup this afternoon I thought I would post something Cup related for Trove Tuesday.

The year is 1911 and two Western Australian based ladies, Miss McBeath and Miss Auld, become the proprietors of a high-class millinery business in Melbourne. In order to attract business from their existing clientele, they advertise locally in Western Australia.

Interestingly Miss McBeath and Miss Auld advertised the latest in Parisian and London models. Given the Melbourne Cup winner for that year one wonders if the ladies had an insight into the outcome of the upcoming race. The 1911 Melbourne Cup was run on Tuesday 7 November and headlines of the day after the race read "THE MELBOURNE CUP OF 1911. VICTORY FOR THE PARISIAN" [Source: The Brisbane Courier, p5]

John Adamson & Son, Glasgow, SCT [Photographers]

This post is a continuation in a series of posts looking at late nineteenth century photographers. By using the information on the rear imprint, our aim is to use this information as a guide to helping us narrow down a date range of when the photograph was taken.

John Adamson & Son - 126 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

On the back of one of the carte de visite photographs in the Georgina Auld nee Muir album is a photograph by Scottish 'Photographic Artists' John Adamson & Son. The Adamson studio is listed as 126 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, as well as Victoria Street in Rothesay.

Example rear imprint for photographers John Adamson & Son
[Auld Photograph Collection apc-000023-s2]

Using the Scottish Post Office Directories

Researching through the Scottish Post-Office Directories for Glasgow, there is no listing for a John Adamson & Son in the 1871-72 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory under the name Adamson in the General Directory or alternatively under the list of Photographic Artists in the Trades Directory section.

The 1872-73 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory has several entries for John Adamson & Son. Under the General section of the directory there is a listing under the surname Adamson. The father and son team are listed as photographic artists at 126 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow.

1872-73 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory, p50

In the Street Directory section under "SAUCHIEHALL STREET", the above information is confirmed with a listing at number 126. Here John Adamson & Son are listed as artists, as opposed to photographers.

1872-73 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory, p533

In the Trades Directory section there are two listing, one under "ARTISTS", and another under "PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTISTS". Extracts follow:

Trade Directory: Artists
1872-73 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory, p558

Trade Directory: Photographic Artists
1872-73 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory, p658

There is no listing John Adamson & Son in the 1873-74 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory. In fact, according to the Street Directory section at 126 Sauchiehall Street, the photographer John Stuart is now operating from these premises.

1873-74 Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory, p548

John Adamson & Son - Victoria Street, Rothesay

Currently the Scottish Post-Office Directories have available to view online the Bute County Directories for 1889-1912. Searching the first available directory, the 1889-90 Bute County Directory, which includes the areas Rothesay, North Bute, Kingarth, Port-Bannatyne, reveals John Adamson & Son are still operational in 1889. They are listed under the "Part II - Householders - Parish of Rothesay" section of the directory, and although they now no longer have their studio in Victoria Street, it clearly shows the pair are still operating their photographic studio at this time.

1889-90 Bute County Directory, p.33

Dating the photograph based on the evidence

The documentary evidence based solely on the information sourced from the Post Office Directories, dates the photo to between 1872 and 1873. Further research may be able to narrow the date range down further.

Originally I had marked the photograph as unknown, but by making comparisons with other photographs in the album, I believe the individual on the left to be John Walker. A previous blog post on John Walker by David Scott [Carte de visite] shows John Walker in 1876. Research by +Paul Cooper has revealed that Walker arrived in New South Wales during 1876.

This particular photograph appears to show a slightly older Walker. A close-up comparison follows and shows John Walker in 1876 (left side) compared to John Walker in this photograph (right side).

For dating purposes and based on the above comparison we could assume approximately five years plus or minus two years between photos.

Imprint on rear face is medium sized and includes both text and artwork. Inscription of the text reads as:

ROBERT BAXTER
Artist - Photographer
YOUNG.

Researching the photographer Robert Baxter has been elusive, but Sandy Barrie's fantastic book and resource titled Australians Behind the Camera - Directory of Early Australian Photographers, 1841 to 1945 has been invaluable.

It appears Robert Baxter was a travelling photographer who operated under his own name throughout the period 1870 to 1903. He is recorded in the following regional towns of southern New South Wales - Campbelltown, Yass, Coma, Queanbeyan, Young, Merimbula and Wollongong. In regards to operating from Young, where this particular photograph was taken, there are two time periods listed in Sandy Barrie's publication - December 1873 to January 1875 as well as during the year 1880.

Taking the dates that Robert Baxter was in Young and overlaying the information when John Walker arrived in Australia, we can date the photograph to the year 1880.

Trove Tuesday: For sale

Have you ever wondered what your relatives sold?

For sale

A search by the Advertising category within the Victorian newspaper Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express on Trove, reveals some interesting items that were offered for sale in 1945.

Source: Advertising. (1945, June 15). Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express (Vic. : 1908 - 1949), p. 3. Retrieved October 1, 2013, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article64708015

What was the background for this sale?

The above items were offered for sale in June 1945. My great grandparents, William Wallace Auld and Rose Helena nee Miller, moved to Merton Victoria, circa 1936. This was a particularly hard time for the family as their daughter in law, Sylvia Auld nee Masterton, had passed away on 17 December 1935 as a result of a dreadful accident that occurred at the family home in Forbes, New South Wales. The accident in July 1935 was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald and reads as follows:

YOUNG WOMAN BURNT.
FORBES. Tuesday.
Quickly enveloped in flames when her dress caught alight at her farm home, Mrs John Auld, a young woman, of Grawlin Plains, near Forbes, ran towards her husband, who was working in stockyards near the house. She fainted before reaching him. After treatment by her husband, she was rushed to hospital.
Mrs. Auld was standing with her back to an open fire in a grate when she smelt burning cloth. She looked round and saw the flames spreading round her. It was some minutes before her husband heard her screams and came to her assistance. She was badly burned about the arms, legs, and shoulders, but her condition is not serious.

With a grief stricken son and three young children to look after, the family moved back to Rose Helena's hometown of Merton in Victoria. In November 1943, William Wallace Auld passed away after an illness of
Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis and Cardiac Asthma, no doubt all relating to his years working as a baker.

It was after these events, with Australian in general just coming out of it's slow recovery from the Great Depression of the 1930s, that the family was looking for that extra little bit of cash and offered the items for sale.

It appears from both newspaper articles and information provided online via the Mariners and ships in Australian Waters website, William Barclay and the ship Northampton were also regularly travelling between London and Sydney.

What is the connection?

Additional research provided by +Paul Cooper has revealed a William Barclay (Shipmaster) in Saltcoates appeared in the same parish register as the Reverend John Auld's birth. So it is possible that the family know of each other from their time spent growing up in Ayrshire.

Trove Tuesday: A marriage in Borneo

For todays Trove Tuesday post I would like to share an illustrated article that I came across and to also share, by way of a walk through, the process I underwent in order to identify the person and link them into one of the Auld branches I had previously identified.

To be married in Borneo

The following illustration printed in the South Australian newspaper The Advertiser in March 1949 relates to an upcoming marriage of Patricia Auld and Richard Rennick. The couple are to married in Kuching, Borneo.

Source: To Be Married In Borneo. (1949, March 16). The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954), p. 8.
Retrieved September 3, 2013, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article36357428

Tracing Patricia Auld's ancestry

My initial response was - who was Patricia? The answer wasn't far away...at the top of the page to be honest! From the information provided we now know Patricia's full name to be Patricia Bayliss Howard Auld and that she was formerly from Adelaide, now living in Kuching, Sarawak.

Source: About People. (1949, March 16). The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954), p. 8.
Retrieved September 3, 2013, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article36357367

Searching further afield I stumbled upon the archived newspaper The Sarawak Gazette provided by the Sarawak State Library. Details of the upcoming marriage was printed on the front page in the 7 March 1949 edition of the Gazette.

Source: Forthcoming Marriage. (1949, March 7). The Sarawak Gazette, p.1. Retrieved September 3, 2013, from http://www.pustaka-sarawak.com/Pustaka-Sarawak/gazette_uploaded/1371429520.pdf

Patricia is listed as the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs P. H. Auld. Continuing the search I took a chance and checked the service records on the National Archives of Australia website. The WW2 Service Record catalogue entry for Patricia Bayliss Howard Auld lists a Patrick Auld as next of kin with a birth date of 1 December 1921. This date was confirmed back on Trove with the birth notification that appeared in the Chronicle newspaper:

Source: Family Notices. (1921, December 17). Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), p. 55.
Retrieved September 3, 2013, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article87559350

A further search revealed a marriage for Captain Patrick H. Auld MC, son of George Auld, to Marie English, daughter of J. W. English.

Source: Family Notices. (1919, November 15). The Mail (Adelaide, SA : 1912 - 1954), p. 8.

I have previously blogged about Patrick Howard Auld MC for Trove Tuesday back on 2 July. Now to enter all of this new information into the Auld database!
