Trove Tuesday : Catherine Mary Auld

With only an hour left for today's Trove Tuesday I thought I would make things easy on myself (joke) and look for an Auld  mentioned on Trove...that isn't listed in my Auld database.

The find...

A quick search of the archived newspapers on Trove, reveals a marriage between Frank Morris and Catherine Mary Auld. The detailed write up that appears in The Brisbane Courier on 5 March 1927 reads as follows:

MORRIS-AULD.
An interesting wedding was celebrated at the Albert-street Methodist Church on February 12, when Mr Frank Morris (only son of Mr. George Morris and the late Mrs. Morris, Charters Towers) was married to Miss Catherine Mary (May) Auld (eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Auld, Buckland-road, Nundah). Rev. W. L. Slater officiated. The church organist presided at the organ. During   the signing of the register Mr. J. D. Abraham rendered a vocal solo. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of ivory mariette, made   with panels heavily beaded in silver over a French pleated skirt. Her tulle veil, which was kindly lent by Mrs. Robert Auld, formed a train, and was arranged in cap effect, finished with orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of dahlias, asters, and maidenhair fern set in tulle, with white satin streamers, and silver slipper attached. There were two bridesmaids - Misses Hilda Little and Margaret Auld (sister of the bride). The former wore a frock of lavender mariette, which had a beaded and pintucked bodice and a French pleated skirt. The latter wore a pale blue mariette frock, heavily beaded in flower design. Both maids   wore black picture hats, and carried shower bouquets with tulle streamers. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was   a handbag, and to the bridesmaids a tourmaline bar brooch and conjette handbag respectively. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr. Norm. Finter, and those of groomsman by Mr. Charles Auld. At the conclusion of the ceremony the reception was held at Webster's Cafe Majestic. The bride's mother received her guests wearing a frock of black mariette, heavily beaded, with which she wore a hat to match. The posy was of mauve asters and maidenhair fern. Subsequently the bridal pair left for their honeymoon, when the bride wore a travelling frock of navy blue Marocain, with a hat to harmonise, and a black satin travelling Coat. The three-tier wedding cake was made at the Imperial Cafe by Miss Hilda Little, and iced and de- corated by Mis. H. S. Thurecht. The bouquets were the work of Peterson's Acacia Florists.

So who is Catherine Mary Auld?

The article gives us some clues as to who Catherine Mary / May Auld is, including:

  1. She is the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs W. Auld
  2. Parents live at Buckland Road, Nundah
  3. Mrs Robert Auld (lender of the tulle veil) - possible auntie or sister-in-law
  4. Has a sister named Margaret Auld

A quick search of the electoral rolls in Queensland for the year 1925, reveal our Catherine Mary Auld living at The Braes in Union Street Nundah. Four other Auld family members are also listed, Charles William, Louisa Ann, Robert Andrew and William.

We could assume that William Auld and Louisa Ann Auld (the only other female listed) are Catherine's parents - listed as Mr & Mrs W. Auld in the original article. This assumption is confirmed with a search of the Queensland historical BDM indexes. The indexes tell us that Catherine Mary AULD was born circa 1897 (index number 1897/C3408) to parents William AULD and Louisa Ann BARNES.
